Vignette, Sun join others to promote content management

VIGNETTE AND SUN Microsystems announced on Tuesday that they have joined
forces with 12 other service companies to promote content management
education and expansion through the development of a new platform, called
eXtended Content Management (XCM).

Through the integration of their technologies, the 14-member XCM alliance
will define content management enterprise criteria and offer support for
companies looking to construct a framework capable of scaling their online
business processes, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

The alliance -- made up of content development management, application
management and content delivery/acceleration management hardware and
software companies -- intends to clear up escalating market confusion by
providing customers with one point of contact for buying and implementing
their content management needs.

"We believe that at least through 2002, no one vendor will be able to
provide a complete content management framework and that, to meet user
requirements, the market will evolve through tightly knit partner
consortiums, "said Andrew Warzecha, vice president of Stamford,
Conn.-based META Group, in a prepared statement. "It's refreshing to see
that some vendors have started to listen."

The alliance will sell, market and develop XCM software products,
according to company officials at Austin, Tex.-based Vignette.

Other founding members of the XCM Alliance are Akamai, Artesia
Technologies, Bulldog, Concero, FileNET, Idiom, Inktomi, Macromedia,
Nexgenix, Rational Software, Quark, and Virage.
