Salon.com is offering its in-house content-management system to other 
companies in the form of a spin-off, following the famously successful 
example of CNET, the Web publisher that spun off the Vignette 
content-management system with great success in 1996. Media 
companies--foundering in their efforts to drive high valuations for their 
advertising-driven Internet properties--are trying to morph into
technology 
companies.
