When I first covered Octopus, last July, the company was in the business
of making a service that consumers could use to aggregate and relate data
from multiple online sources onto a single Web page. We picked Octopus as
a Red Herring 100 company in 2000. But as we said in this year's Red
Herring 100, "Personalized Web pages? Sorry, our bad."

The online consumer content business didn't work out, so it's no surprise
that meta-consumer-content plays didn't work either. So Octopus ported its
technology to the enterprise, and CTO Craig Jorasch is convinced the
business will take off this time.

In addition to extracting data (not just pages) from online sites, Octopus
now can pluck info from Siebel, SAP, and Exchange servers. Unlike most
other integration products, the extraction is handled at end-users'
workstations, so no changes to intranet firewall and security settings are
needed.

Standard & Poor's is using Octopus to quickly create pages that it makes
available to its investment advisors and brokers (but not consumers).
That's very positive for the company, although the space Octopus inhabits
is crowded. The company has raised $16 million but will need another round
to cross into profitability.
