No Such Thing as a Free Lunch

Fed up with a loosey-goosey business model predicated on the notion that a

newspaper could give its content away for nothing and still show a profit,

dailies nationwide are pulling the plug on their free Web sites. As Editor

& Publisher reports, news surfers will find their favorite beaches closed
as papers begin to charge subscription fees for content access. Among the
publishing concerns that have initiated premium services are Media General

Inc., a consortium of 25 dailies and Ottaway Newspapers Inc., a subsidiary

of Dow Jones & Co. Other papers, like The New York Times, have initiated
subscription services for niche interests such as crossword puzzles.
According to E&P, user reaction has, not surprisingly, been decidedly
negative.
