STANDARD TO SUSPEND EUROPEAN EDITION
Standard Media International has suspended publication of the Industry
Standard Europe while continuing to search for a buyer or investor,
reports Inside <http://www.inside.com/jcs/Story?article_id=28217&pod_id=7>
. Next week's issue will be the last for the foreseeable future and the
staff will now be filing for the U.S. edition, according to the story.
Company officials refused to discuss any job cuts. However, the Financial

Times puts the layoff figure at 55, and reports that a staff of about 10
will remain in the European bureau to contribute to the U.S. publication.
European publisher Neil Thackray said last week that he was confident the
magazine would reach break-even at the end of next year, reports The

l> Guardian. The speed of the decision took everyone by surprise.
"They're overstaffed in the U.S., and it appears the easiest solution was
to shut us down ... It's pretty galling, to be honest," said one employee
quoted in the story.
MAINSTREAMING PORN, THE YAHOO WAY
It seems the downturn has really hit them hard. Yahoo has opened an online
porn video store, stocked with thousands of hard-core DVDs and video
tapes, according to a report in Los
<http://www.latimes.com/business/updates/lat_yahoo010411.htm> Angeles
Times. The move is significant as Yahoo is the first big Internet company
to embrace porn, and the move points to "the desperation of Internet
companies to find new sources of revenue amid a slowing economy." Yahoo
officials declined to discuss the store or the revenue/profit scenario,
though they did say that "under stringent control, adult products have
been available through Yahoo Shopping for more than two years." The report
says that Yahoo has been expanding the shop's offerings in recent weeks,
as well as its security system blocking underage shoppers.
Competitors like AOL do not allow the sale of adult material and "that is
not going to change," according to an AOL spokesperson quoted in the
story. Yahoo will report its quarterly results today, widely expected to
be its second consecutive quarter in red.
SO, YOU HAD THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE, BUT NOW...
From the "migration" of Henry Luce's portrait to Steve Case's office to no
more catered dinner on Wednesdays, life at Time magazine has certainly
been changing, the AOL way, according to a story in New
<http://www.nyobserver.com/pages/frontpage5.asp> York Observer. The
"appropriation" of the portrait was explained as an effort by Case to
embrace the values the co-founder of Time magazine stood for.
Meanwhile, the New <http://www.nypost.com/business/28415.htm> York Post
reports that Life magazine will open retail stores nationwide to market
the photos that once graced the pages of America's most famous magazine
title. Under a licensing and royalty arrangement with a San Jose-based
company, the stores will sell the memorable pictures which currently sit
unappreciated in the archives of the Time & Life building in New York.
A WOODSIAN TURN FOR DISNEY
Disney is preparing to sign Tiger Woods as a spokesman for various Disney
properties, according to a Wall
<http://interactive.wsj.com/articles/SB986939397869738407.htm> Street
Journal (subscription required) report. The Woods deal has been in
negotiations for several months and is expected to be announced next week.
The story speculates that "Mr. Woods could appear in commercials for the
company's theme parks, endorse merchandise or work with Disney's ESPN
unit, whose holdings include sports cable TV networks, a magazine and a
theme restaurant."
ALSO...
BPI Communications, publisher of magazines such as Adweek, MediaWeek and
Billboard, is turning in a profit on four of its ten online properties
according to its CEO, in an interview with Silicon

Daily. Subscriptions, ad sales, and licensing are the three main sources
of revenue and contribute equally to the total, says the CEO.
Google may be scooping up more portal space than is palatable to its
licensees like Yahoo and Netscape, according to analysis in CNET
<http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-200-5561996.html?tag=tp_pr> . It has
quietly introduced services such as white pages phone and address
look-ups, mapping, Web site translation services and newsgroup access,
which according to analysts quoted in the story may dilute its reputation
as a search specialist. However, the company executives deny any move to
get onto their customers' portal turf.

If Boot Camp ripped off Survivor, what about Judge Judy and The People's
Court? CBS argued that similarities are commonplace -- and beat Fox's
attempt to block its reality-race show.
